The shapes set into their flesh are Aeldari sigils of destruction that pulse with a venomous green brilliance when the Mandrake feeds upon the terror and pain of its victims. Often the first sign of an imminent Mandrake attack will be the sudden onset of freezing temperatures, flash freezing all the moisture out of the very air. Surrounding them is an aura of darkness and cold that saps the strength from all those with the misfortune to be standing nearby. Their flesh is night-black and seems to absorb rather than reflect light, their featureless faces shift like rancid oil while their hair is the color of splintered bone. Such theories do not seem so far-fetched when one examines the Mandrakes' appearance. They believe that the Mandrakes are the absence of light given life, and in that they may very well be right. Young Drukhari call the Mandrakes "creepers" and whisper that they crawl from one shadow to another and can emerge from one's reflection into the real universe. Others hold that the living shadows are descended from a forbidden Aeldari pleasure cult that found its own way to escape the devastation of the Fall, fleeing into a nightmare dimension of shadow within the Immaterium and reemerging as something no longer quite natural. Some Aeldari savants claim that the Mandrakes are descended from those of their species inhabiting the Webway who before the Fall of the Aeldari engaged in heinous acts of lust with daemonic entities of the Warp when the lost Aeldari Empire was at its most decadent. The true origins of the Mandrakes remain shrouded in time and secrecy. Even when you’re playing keep-a-way, it never grows into something with variety. The platforming never evolves into anything special. It all boils down to running around until you can eventually make a break for wherever you are headed. These sections don’t really constitute stealth-action either, as the aforementioned monster will pretty much always know where you are. Kay has no means of self-defense or attack, so she has to maneuver around them. First appearing at the mid-point of the first story arc, these little guys prove to be one of the more troublesome obstacles you’ll have to deal with. Unfortunately, she’ll need to do so in order to press forward.Īs the plot of Sea of Solitude progresses, Kay will encounter smaller, more annoying monsters. Beware, though, as if she enters certain parts of the water without her boat, the monster will quickly follow. She can even fire off a flare that will help point her in the direction she needs to go. Kay can move around surprisingly well and can scamper up buildings in order to reach new sections. These sections play out like your standard 3D platformer. Additional variety would have been nice to see.Ĭorruption is found everywhere, though, so Kay will frequently have to leave her ship in order to clear it. You clear out corruption in a few sections, but that’s still just a case of sitting and holding down a button. It can get a tad boring, though, as you don’t really do much else in it. Steering the ship is simple, and it’s easy enough to get from one place to another. It’s certainly the safest way to travel, as a monster lurking beneath the surface is intent on gobbling Kay up. With most of the city submerged underwater, you’ll spend a lot of time traveling in your boat. Whether it was due to translation issues or its lack of subtlety, the script doesn’t always work in the way it needs to, making powerful moments fall flat in an unfortunate way. The main issue that hinders the story, though, is the script itself. It’s a thoughtful depiction of the power relationships hold, and what it means when you damage them. Taking on everything from toxic relationships to bullying, Sea of Solitude is designed to put the player through the wringer - if you have ever had to deal with any of these problems before, it definitely achieves what it sets out to do. However, while they may cause plenty of physical pain, it’s the emotional attacks they inflict on our heroine that prove to be the most challenging to overcome.
